Nelson-based Melanie Stewart started her business with a simple goal in mind: to create natural, effective skincare products inspired by her daughters’ needs.
When her eldest daughter, Meela, was a baby, Melanie found herself searching for ways to help soothe her sensitive skin and encourage a calm bedtime routine. That’s when she developed her first balm—a blend of locally sourced, natural ingredients, made in her home for her family. Soon, friends and family were asking for it, and before she knew it, Mello Balm was born.
In this Q&A, we dive into her journey, her love for Nelson, and the natural goodness behind Mello Balm.
What was it like growing up in New Zealand? Tell us more about Nelson and what you love about this place.
I loved growing up here, but I actually split my time between here and California, USA. Both are very different places, but New Zealand is my home. I grew up in Christchurch, and after the earthquakes, much of my family relocated to Nelson. We love it here! It feels like living in a holiday spot, and it's great for my business because people in Nelson love natural products. It's a small place, but it has everything you need and plenty of things to do.
What’s the biggest lesson you’ve learned from starting and running a business?
It takes time to build a customer base. One minute it’s exciting, the next it's stressful or scary. You won’t earn much at first, but the key is not to give up.
When someone says 'NZ Made,' what comes to your mind?
A cute little home office, hard work, unique and high-quality products, made with locally sourced ingredients and lots of love.
Tell us about the inspiration and story behind Mello Balm Green.
My girls are my biggest inspiration. I have a 2-year-old and a 4-year-old, both with sensitive skin, and one prone to eczema. I started experimenting with locally sourced ingredients for them, and before long, I was making it for friends and family. I was encouraged to sell it, and since then, we’ve upgraded the beeswax to high-quality Manuka beeswax. The goal has always been to create something natural, effective, and affordable, and we’ve stuck with that since day one.
How do you cope with the change of season in NZ, specifically from spring to summer?
Plenty of water, healthy food, natural goodies, and self-care!
What does wellness mean to you? How do you personally practice wellness and self-care?
For me, wellness is about balance. I make everything I can from home, whether it’s balms, soaps, or food. We keep things as natural as possible. Our kids spend plenty of time outdoors, and I think that’s the best form of self-care.
